The Last Simon & Garfunkel Concert

Simon & Garfunkel last performed a concert in 2010 with Art Garfunkel struggling through the performance due to health issues at the time.

On Saturday, April 24, 2010, Simon & Garfunkel performed at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Due to health issues, Art Garfunkel struggled through the performance, supported by Paul Simon. Seeing the two onstage as the show was coming to a close, someone in the audience would be surprised that it would be the last concert the two performed together.

The two would reunite briefly two months later for one song, “Mrs. Robinson,” at an American Film Institute Life Achievement Award tribute to director Mike Nichols. But the New Orleans Jazz Festival remains the last show the two did together.

Through the years, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel became almost as well known for their feuds and breakups as for their beautiful harmonies and great library of recordings. And then there were the various reunions, including the famous 1981 Concert in Central Park. Another one of their reunions was the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Festival. It was not meant to be their final concert, and many additional shows were planned as part of the tour.

In New Orleans, though, Art Garfunkel had been sick and showed up with what was later diagnosed as vocal cord paresis. The difficulties with his voice during the show led him later to explain, “I was terrible, and crazy nervous. I leaned on Paul Simon and the affection of the crowd.”

His voice struggles and the ensuing support from Simon and the crowd highlight the main set closing song, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” While reports regarding earlier parts of the show focused on the troubled performance and ruined songs, the closing number was a triumph, at least in context of Garfunkel’s problems.

Oh, if you need a friend,
I’m sailing right behind;
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will ease your mind;
Like a bridge over troubled water,
I will ease your mind.

Garfunkel made it through the difficult song, supported by his lifelong friend and sometimes nemesis, and urged on by the crowd. It is beautiful to watch, especially in light of the message of the song about supporting a friend.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” was the closing number of the 15-song set. But the two came back on stage for an encore with three more songs, “Sounds of Silence,” “The Boxer,” and “Cecilia.” It would be the main closer “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” though, that remains most remembered for the song’s reliance on Garfunkel’s challenged solo voice to hit the high notes.

Yet, despite what appears to be love and good will between the two men onstage in New Orleans, that good will would be lost once again after the performance. They had to cancel the rest of the tour due to Garfunkel’s vocal problems.

After the show, Garfunkel looked forward to eventually continuing performing as a duo. But his claim to Simon that he would be able to continue within a year did not come true. Simon felt Garfunkel was not honest about the seriousness of the problem. Once again, their exchanges damaged the trust between the two men. The distrust, as well as the friendship, went back to when they were teenagers (when Garfunkel first felt Simon breached a trust by signing a record deal without him).

After the New Orleans performance and delays, more words were exchanged through the media. In a 2015 interview, Garfunkel called Simon a “jerk” and “idiot” for breaking up the duo, though he still left open the possibility of a reunion. But in 2016, Simon said, a reunion was “out of the question” and that the two men no longer even talked.

Garfunkel’s voice did return, as shown by a 2019 solo acoustic performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” But with the exception of the short 2010 tribute to The Graduate director Mike Nichols, Simon and Garfunkel never returned to the stage together.

While we can still hope for a reunion, Paul Simon announced his retirement from touring in 2018. But he has appeared live since then, including a 2019 show where he sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

    The First #1 Hit By The Everly Brothers

    Wake Up Little Susie

    On October 14, 1957, the Everly Brothers scored their first number one song with “Wake Up Little Susie.” The song had been released on September 2 as a follow-up to their hit “Bye Bye Love,” which had only gone to number two on the charts during that summer.

    Controversy About the Lyrics

    Some critics of “Wake Up Little Susie” raised concerns it was about teenage sex, and Don Everly later reported that the song was actually banned on some Boston radio stations at one point. Others, however, thought the song was a more innocent tale about two teenagers who had fallen asleep at the movies.

    No matter how you read the song, you cannot deny it is quite catchy, which, along with the great harmonies by Don Everly and Phil Everly, are the reasons it went to the top of the charts. Check out this Everly Brothers performance from 1957 overdubbed with the hit single.

    Simon & Garfunkel Version

    Another duo with amazing harmonies, Simon & Garfunkel, later paid tribute to the Everly Brothers by performing “Wake Up Little Susie” at their famous Concert in Central Park on September 19, 1981.

    Simon & Garfunkel also had some chart success with “Wake Up Little Susie.” The release of their Concert in Central Park version became Simon & Garfunkel’s last top 40 hit, with the song going to number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.

    A Beginning for the Everly Brothers

    Although “Wake Up Little Susie” was the Everly Brother’s first number-one song, it was not their last. The Everly Brothers topped the charts again the following year in 1958 with “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” and they did it again in 1960 with “Cathy’s Clown.”

    Super Bowl Songs: The Only Living Boy in New York

    NY Giants Tailgater Football Now that we have already discussed this year’s Super Bowl movies and a song for the New England Patriots, it is time to pick a song for the New York Giants. A New York team gives us several options of the many “New York” songs. After I discovered there was not a good video of John Coltraine playing “Giant Steps,” I was leaning toward one of my favorite Bruce Springsteen songs, but then I remembered the beautiful Simon & Garfunkel song, “The Only Living Boy in New York.” Considering that the Giants play their home games in New Jersey, the song also has a connection to that state, having been featured in the movie Garden State (2004), which is set in the “Garden State” of New Jersey.

    Although the song may work for the listener in many contexts, such as in that movie, much of the perfection of the song comes from the fact that it had personal meaning for Paul Simon:

    “Tom, get your plane right on time;
    I know your part will go fine;
    Fly down to Mexico.”

    Simon and Garfunkel started out in 1957 performing under the name “Tom & Jerry,” so one may see from the opening line that the song is a message to Tom, i.e., Art Garfunkel. In an interview, Simon explained, “That was written about Artie’s going off to make Catch 22 in Mexico.” At the time, Garfunkel had left Simon in New York to act in the movie Catch 22 (1970). One hears Simon’s melancholy at being left behind by his friend and singing partner in the chords of the song.

    The song appeared on Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), the last studio album from the team, and one hears the dissolution of the collaboration and the sadness of a deteriorating friendship that had started in high school. In the original, one hears the sadness in both voices, and you still hear it in Simon’s voice looking back as an older man.

    As for this weekend, New York Giant fans hope they will not have sadness in their voices after Sunday’s game.

    Post-Super Bowl Update: After the Giants won the game, the song played in the stadium was “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z. Another good song choice.

    Happy Fourth of July weekend for our readers in the U.S. In a recent post, we considered Willie Nelson’s recording of “Graceland” on his album, Across the Borderline (1993). That CD also featured another classic song written by Paul Simon, “American Tune.” The beautiful music in the song, though, was not original to Simon.

    The music we know from “American Tune” appears in the chorale from “St. Matthew Passion,” BWV 244, written by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) about the crucifixion of Christ. You may hear “American Tune” in that composition in No. 21 (Chorale – “Acknowledge Me My Keeper”), No. 23 (Chorale – “Near Thee I Would Be Staying,” and No. 53 (Chorale – “Wha’ever may vex or grieve thee”). But Bach did not create the theme.

    Bach’s composition reworked “Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret,” composed by Hans Hassler (1564-1612), a German composer who wrote the tune around a century before Bach was born. Hassler’s song was a secular love song known in English as “My Heart is Distracted by a Gentle Maid.” Hymnist Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) also borrowed Hassler’s tune in one of his compositions. We might call Hassler the “Father of Recycling.” Through Gerhardt and Bach, Hassler’s love song became a religious hymn (“O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,/ Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown.”). Here’s the Bach version:

    Paul Simon took the beautiful music and transformed it with new meaning in “American Tune,” which appeared on There Goes Rhymin’ Simon (1973), released as Simon’s second album after his breakup with Art Garfunkel and as America was tangled in Viet Nam and Watergate. As columnist Anne Hill explained, the song “captures perfectly all the complexity of an idealism that died but still lives; the bitter disappointment and deeper hope which are intertwined in the soul of this country.” The lyrics are vague enough to allow for various interpretations, but the music conveys the melancholy of the song while still maintaining the beauty.

    But it’s all right, it’s all right;
    You can’t be forever blessed.
    Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day;
    And I’m trying to get some rest;
    That’s all I’m trying to get some rest.

    Eva Cassidy does a beautiful version of the song too. Among others, Peter, Paul and Mary recorded a folk song, “Because All Men Are Brothers,” which was written by Tom Glazer and is based upon the same Bach music. The song’s lyrics include: “My brother’s fears are my fears, yellow, white, or brown; / My brother’s tears are my tears, the whole wide world around.”

    Thus, Hassler’s tune written in 1601 has functioned as a song of brotherhood, a love song, a hymn of faith, and an American tune about dreams surviving a time of lost innocence. That’s a pretty good record, and a nice theme for Independence Day.

    Chimesfreedom Blog To Be Made Into a Movie!

    We have been waiting to share this exciting news until the papers were finally signed. Chimesfreedom is going to be made into a major motion picture to be released in summer 2013. We cannot reveal too much about the story as the screenplay still needs to be developed further, but the movie will incorporate stories relating to several of our posts as well as the real life drama of blogging.

    We are thrilled with the support and encouragement we have received so far, and the studio is currently negotiating with Aaron Sorkin for screenplay development. As you probably know, Sorkin wrote the screenplay for the recent The Social Network. The producers are still signing up the actors and director for the movie, so look for announcements soon with more details.
