This Land Is Your Land: The Angry Protest Song That Became an American Standard

This Land Is Your Land

On October 6, 2008 at Eastern Michigan University, as the U.S. faced a deep financial crisis, one of the country’s biggest living rock stars took the stage to sing on behalf of a United States presidential candidate. As Bruce Springsteen began strumming his guitar, the candidate stood in a tent behind the scenes with his family. The candidate, who would be elected the country’s first African-American president a month later, sang to his children and danced to the chorus of “This Land Is Your Land.”

“This Land Is Your Land,” along with “America the Beautiful,” is an unofficial national anthem. But this song that presidents sing — and that sometimes is sung in response to presidents’ actions — began as something different.  It was written by a non-conforming down-and-out American troubadour more than seventy-five years earlier.

The Origins of “This Land Is Your Land”

Before “This Land Is Your Land” became a beloved American standard, it was a protest song. According to Joe Klein’s book Woody Guthrie: A Life, the 27-year-old Woody Guthrie began writing the song in 1940 out of anger and frustration.

At the time, Guthrie was living alone in a run-down hotel called Hanover House near Times Square in New York.  He had moved there after wearing out his welcome as a house guest with singer-actor Will Geer and his wife Herta.

Having seen the struggles of common people across America, Guthrie turned his frustration on Irving Berlin’s portrayal of a perfect America in “God Bless America.” Radio disc jockeys repeatedly played Berlin’s song on the radio in the 1930s. In response, Guthrie began writing a song with the sarcastic title “God Blessed America”:

this land is your land woody guthrie This land is your land, this land is my land,
From California to Staten Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf Stream waters,
God Blessed America for Me.

Guthrie wrote five more verses ending with the refrain “God Blessed America for me.” And one verse reported on the men and women standing in lines for food.

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple,
By the relief office I saw my people —
As they stood there hungry,
I stood there wondering if
God blessed America for me.

Guthrie continued to work on the song.  He soon changed “Staten Island” in the refrain to “New York Island.” And he put the lyrics to the tune of the Carter Family’s “Little Darlin’, Pal of Mine.”

The Carter Family, though, did not originally write the music.  They took the tune of “Little Darlin’, Pal of Mine” from the Baptist hymn, “Oh My Lovin’ Brother.”

After Guthrie finished “God Blessed America for Me” on February 23, 1940, he put the song away. The song then sat untouched for several years.

Then, in April 1944, Guthrie began recording a large number of songs for record executive Moe Asch.  During the last recording session that month, Guthrie pulled out the old protest song.  By now, it had a new tag line and a new title, “This Land Is Your Land.”

The recorded version of “This Land Is Your Land” did not include the verse about the relief office. One may speculate about the reasons, but Guthrie may have made the changes for a nation at war.  Or perhaps he no longer saw a need to respond to “God Bless America.”

The artist and the producers did not treat “This Land Is Your Land” any differently than the other songs recorded at the sessions. Asch did not have the money to release any of the songs.  So, once again the song sat in limbo. Asch, however, later claimed he recognized something important in the song. (p. 285.)

By December of that year, Guthrie had started using “This Land” as the theme song for his weekly radio show on WNEW. And the Weavers recorded the song too.

Most early recordings by Guthrie and other artists omitted one of the more controversial verses.  The verse criticized capitalism and private property.  It evoked a time when Guthrie and other Okies were turned away at the California border:

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn’t say nothing;
This land was made for you and me.

Versions of “This Land Is Your Land”

Since Guthrie wrote the song, many artists have covered it.  The song has been sung by artists such as Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Sharon Jones, The Seekers, Renée Zellweger, Bob Dylan, Tom Morello, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Marc Scibilia.

For example, below is a 1989 collaboration between Los Lobos with Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.

Below, watch a recording of “This Land Is Your Land” that features several major artists.  The singers include Bono, Emmylou Harris, and Little Richard.  This version appeared in the documentary A Vision Shared: Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly.  A different version appears on the album of the same name.

I like the way this version starts with Woody, and then it transitions into his son Arlo Guthrie and other singers.  The song stays understated before becoming a joyous hoedown with John Mellencamp.

Bruce Springsteen has performed “This Land Is Your Land” for decades.  He included it on his Live 1975-1985 box set. And he also performed it with Guthrie’s friend Pete Seeger at a special concert in Washington to celebrate Pres. Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.

More recently, on February 5, 2017, Lada Gaga included “This Land Is Your Land” in her Super Bowl halftime performance. As the country seemed divided in recent weeks following the inauguration of Donald Trump as president, Lady Gaga began with “God Bless America” and then went into “This Land Is Your Land.” Knowing that Guthrie wrote his song in response to “God Bless America” gives one a deeper understanding of Lady Gaga’s message that this land is for you and me.

Yet, I suspect many people who came of age around the 1960s first heard “This Land Is Your Land” sung by Peter, Paul & Mary. The trio, like many other artists, recognized that the song works best when everyone sings along.

The Legacy of “This Land Is Your Land”

“This Land is Your Land” took on a life of its own.  And it no longer belongs to one person. For example, it can be used for discussion and criticized for its failure to connect the land to the Native Americans (although other artists have altered the song to do so).  As noted in previous posts on Woody Guthrie, his work and his songs remain relevant today.  Like Guthrie’s other songs, his most famous and timeless song, “This Land Is Your Land,” remains relevant too.

If Woody Guthrie had done nothing else besides write “This Land Is Your Land,” we would still honor him. “This Land Is Your Land” is the first song you think of when you think of the singer-songwriter. It is the song that ends every Guthrie tribute show. “This Land Is Your Land” is the song that David Carradine sings on top of a box car in the final scene of the Guthrie bio-pic Bound for Glory (1976). Also, it is the first song listed in Guthrie’s Wikipedia entry.

Additionally, “This Land Is Your Land” is the first Guthrie song you learned in school.  And it is the song that Presidents dance to.

It all started with a relatively unknown drifter in the 1940s venting his anger and frustration in his lonely fleabag room.  In that room, thinking about what he had seen traveling from California to the New York Island, Woody Guthrie wrote one of the country’s most beautiful songs.

    Peter Paul & Mary: El Salvador

    On today’s date of February 19 in 1981, the United States government released a report claiming an El Salvador insurgency came from aggression by communists. The report prompted the U.S. government under new President Ronald Reagan to begin to address the perceived threat. The U.S. then assisted the government of El Salvador against rebels by sending money and advisers to the country.

    Through the 1980s, the U.S. government spent more and more money on El Salvador. Still, violence and instability continued in El Salvador, with many accusations of torture, kidnapping, and assassination on both sides.

    Although Peter, Paul & Mary are best-known for the songs they recorded in the 1960s, they still made some excellent music later in their career. One of their late-career highlights is “El Salvador,” which they recorded in 1982 soon after the U.S. report and the escalations in that country.

    In the song “El Salvador,” written by “Paul” — i.e., Noel Paul Stookey, the trio helped bring attention to the continuing atrocities in that country and the involvement of the U.S. government in the mess. Stookey and the other singers were surprised to sometimes hear booing when they sang the song, which later appeared on Songs of Conscience and Concern (1999). Here, Peter, Paul & Mary perform “El Salvador” at their 25th Anniversary Concert in 1986 — without any booing.

    At the end of the song, the trio asked a question:

    They’ll continue training troops in the USA,
    And watch the nuns that got away,
    And teach the military bands to play South of the Border,
    And kill the people to set them free;
    Who put this price on their liberty?
    Don’t you think it’s time to leave
    El Salvador?

    In 1992, the United Nations and Costa Rica President Oscar Arias helped negotiate a deal between the warring parties in El Salvador. Although a U.N. commission condemned the U.S.’s involvement in Salvadoran military atrocities, then U.S. President George H.W. Bush claimed that the peace was a result of the U.S.’s long fight against communism El Salvador.

    But today even the U.S. Department of State website recognizes the problems: “During the 12-year civil war, human rights violations by both the government security forces and left-wing guerillas were rampant.”

    Peter Paul & Mary’s First Contract . . . and Puff

    Peter Paul & Mary signed their first recording contract on January 29, 1962.  Thus began a recording career with Warner Brothers that would help bring folk music and Bod Dylan’s music to a broad audience.

    That broader audience included me when I was a kid. We did not have Bob Dylan albums in my house when I was a kid, but we did have Peter Paul & Mary’s second album, Moving (1963), which included “Puff the Magic Dragon.” The trio and “Puff” eventually led me to Dylan and other folk singers. They even led me to John Denver with their cover of “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane.”

    Although today I only have a couple of Peter Paul & Mary albums, I have a huge collection of Dylan and other folk songs that they helped me discover. So, while some hear them and think of a group less authentic than some other folk singers because of their smooth harmonies and the way the group formed, I hear the joy in their music.  And I appreciate the role they played in my music education.

    “Puff the Magic Dragon”

    The story of “Puff the Magic Dragon” began in 1958 when Leonard Lipton, who was a Cornell student, found inspiration in Ogden Nash’s “The Tale of Custard the Dragon.” Lipton used that inspiration to write his own poem about a dragon.

    Lipton showed his poem to another Cornell student, Peter Yarrow, who added music and additional lyrics. Not much later, Manager Albert Grossman, looking to capitalize on the growing folk music trend, put together what he saw as a commercial pairing of Yarrow with Peter Stookey and Mary Travers.

    Thus began Peter Paul & Mary.  The new group recorded “Puff the Magic Dragon” in 1962, and it went on to rise to #2 on the Billboard charts.

    What is “Puff” About?

    Several years after “Puff the Magic Dragon” was released, rumors started about drug references in the song. Yarrow and Lipton have both explained that the song is really about a loss of innocence, and Lipton has compared the story to Peter Pan on his blog.

    Many decades on, the song’s themes about lost innocence resonate more strongly for those of us who grew up listening to the song. When I hear the song, I think not only about the lost innocence of Little Jackie Paper.  I also think about my own childhood listening to the unusual dark children’s song.  In the song, I sensed some frightening message about the world ahead where little boys do not live forever and dragons are left alone to disappear.

    But in addition to the haunting elements, there was something comforting in the way the three voices blended together, revealing something else in the world.  Perhaps there was a touch of the nearly half-century friendship between the three singers that continued until Mary Travers’s death in 2009.

    And maybe some things do last forever. I do not know where I will be in another half century, but I do know that children still will be singing the college student’s poem about a dragon who frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.

    And that is The Story Behind the Song.

    Update: Dick Kniss, who played bass for Peter Paul & Mary for almost five decades, passed away in 2012 at the age of 74. He also co-wrote John Denver’s hit, “Sunshine on My Shoulders.” RIP.

    Happy Christmas (War is Over)

    War is Over

    Merry Christmas to our readers who celebrate the holiday. With some recent events, an appropriate song for this year is John Lennon’s beautiful “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” The song was released in 1971 while the Viet Nam conflict was still going strong, so the original single was a song of protest and hope instead of a statement of fact.

    Of course, today, the song is still more of a wish than anything else even as violence around the world continues. But in our dreams for the future we can hope for peace.

    Currently, there is not a live video of Lennon singing the song available. So, here is a video of Melissa Etheridge’s version of the song. While nobody can match Lennon, she does an excellent job.

    Lennon’s original, which was recorded with the help of producer Phil Spector and the Harlem Community Choir, may be heard on YouTube without any performance footage. Youtube also has what sounds like a Lennon demo version of the song.

    Of course, there are other covers, including ones by The Fray, Coldplay, The Coors, and Celine Dion.

    Happy Xmas Trivia

    Although many think the opening greetings in the original are John and Yoko telling each other “happy Christmas,” they are not.  The couple is actually giving the greeting to their children, Kyoko and Julian.

    And what about the music? In another piece of trivia, Wikipedia notes that the chord changes to the song come from “Stewball,” a sweet song about a drunk racehorse. If you listen to Peter, Paul, & Mary’s version of the traditional song, you can almost sing “Happy Xmas” along with them.

    I bet on the grey mare, I bet on the bay
    If I’d have bet on ol’ Stewball, I’d be a free man today.

    Oh the hoot owl, she hollers, and the turtle dove moans.
    I’m a poor boy in trouble, I’m a long way from home.

    Here’s to a future Christmas where no soldiers are a long way from home and no civilians know of war. Happy Xmas.

    American Tune

    Happy Fourth of July weekend for our readers in the U.S. In a recent post, we considered Willie Nelson’s recording of “Graceland” on his album, Across the Borderline (1993). That CD also featured another classic song written by Paul Simon, “American Tune.” The beautiful music in the song, though, was not original to Simon.

    The music we know from “American Tune” appears in the chorale from “St. Matthew Passion,” BWV 244, written by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) about the crucifixion of Christ. You may hear “American Tune” in that composition in No. 21 (Chorale – “Acknowledge Me My Keeper”), No. 23 (Chorale – “Near Thee I Would Be Staying,” and No. 53 (Chorale – “Wha’ever may vex or grieve thee”). But Bach did not create the theme.

    Bach’s composition reworked “Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret,” composed by Hans Hassler (1564-1612), a German composer who wrote the tune around a century before Bach was born. Hassler’s song was a secular love song known in English as “My Heart is Distracted by a Gentle Maid.” Hymnist Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) also borrowed Hassler’s tune in one of his compositions. We might call Hassler the “Father of Recycling.” Through Gerhardt and Bach, Hassler’s love song became a religious hymn (“O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,/ Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown.”). Here’s the Bach version:

    Paul Simon took the beautiful music and transformed it with new meaning in “American Tune,” which appeared on There Goes Rhymin’ Simon (1973), released as Simon’s second album after his breakup with Art Garfunkel and as America was tangled in Viet Nam and Watergate. As columnist Anne Hill explained, the song “captures perfectly all the complexity of an idealism that died but still lives; the bitter disappointment and deeper hope which are intertwined in the soul of this country.” The lyrics are vague enough to allow for various interpretations, but the music conveys the melancholy of the song while still maintaining the beauty.

    But it’s all right, it’s all right;
    You can’t be forever blessed.
    Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day;
    And I’m trying to get some rest;
    That’s all I’m trying to get some rest.

    Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed Simon’s song, “American Tune,” at their famous free concert in Central Park on September 19, 1981. The performance appears on the CD, Concert in Central Park. Here is Simon solo.

    Here is Willie Nelson and Simon performing “American Tune” from Nelson’s CD, Across the Borderline. On the album version, Paul Simon produced the recording and backed up Nelson. Check it out below (YouTube also has a live version of the song performed by Nelson and Simon.)

    Eva Cassidy does a beautiful version of the song too. Among others, Peter, Paul and Mary recorded a folk song, “Because All Men Are Brothers,” which was written by Tom Glazer and is based upon the same Bach music. The song’s lyrics include: “My brother’s fears are my fears, yellow, white, or brown; / My brother’s tears are my tears, the whole wide world around.”

    Thus, Hassler’s tune written in 1601 has functioned as a song of brotherhood, a love song, a hymn of faith, and an American tune about dreams surviving a time of lost innocence. That’s a pretty good record, and a nice theme for Independence Day.
