New Single from Marty Brown: “I’m Gonna Make It Fly”

Country singer and America’s Got Talent alum Marty Brown has been busy with a number of projects. He and his wife Shellie were recently Grand Marshalls at the Bowling Green Kentucky Jaycees Christmas Parade. He is also preparing for a television taping on December 20 at the Goodnight Auditorium in Franklin, Kentucky (See his Facebook page for more details). And he just released a new single, “I’m Gonna Make It Fly.”

Regarding the upbeat new song, you may hear an excerpt of the song below. The song begins with a kid preparing his wagon to fly, followed by a story about young lovers. What they all have in common is that they all wanna “make it fly.” The end of the song features a twist ending. You will have to track down the full single for the full story.

“I’m Gonna Make It Fly” is available through iTunes.

How a Checkout Line Inspired Marty Brown’s “Love Comes Easy”

Back in the early 1990s, country singer-songwriter Marty Brown stood in line at Wyndall’s Foodland on U.S. 60 East in Owensboro, Kentucky. In front of Brown, a guy stood watching the cashier scan his groceries. The man watched each price on the cash register until the cashier told him his total. The man responded, “Here, honey. It comes easy, but it goes away hard.”

When Marty Brown heard the man’s comment, he not only recognized a good line but he also knew they would make good lyrics for a song. Brown later explained to the Owensboro Messenger Inquirer that he never knew who the man was, but he took the words as inspiration for his song, “Love Comes Easy,” which appeared on Here’s to the Honky Tonks (1996).

    Love comes easy,
    But it goes down hard;
Just when you think you’ve got the right hand,
You’re holding all the wrong cards.

And that’s the Story Behind the Song.

Authentic Folk Music From Barbara Brown

    barbarabrown
When Chimesfreedom first started writing about Kentucky’s Marty Brown, long before he appeared on America’s Got Talent, we praised the authentic country sound of his music. We also have noted that his musical talent runs in the family. A few new videos on YouTube now illustrate that the source of some of his talent comes from his mother, Barbara Brown.

Check out Barbara Brown sitting on the porch singing the traditional folk ballad, “Baby on the Doorstep,” a song recorded by Frank Luther in 1928 and that otherwise is not on YouTube. Marty Brown accompanies her on what I think is his father’s guitar. [2019 Update: Unfortunately, the video is no longer available.]

In another video, Barbara and Marty Brown duet on “Blue Kentucky Girl.” There’s some genuine great music here. I would buy her album.

Marty Brown Rocks a Packed House (October 4, 2014 Live Review)

    Marty Brown October 2014

On Saturday, October 4, 2014, country singer Marty Brown returned to Middletown, New York to play before a packed house at Brian’s Backyard BBQ and Blues. This time, Brown brought together an excellent backing band, mixing covers and a number of his great original songs, including songs from his latest CD like “Whatever Makes You Smile.”

Marty Brown NY Brown, in the midst of a career renaissance after his appearance on America’s Got Talent, performs like a man who knows how fortunate he is to have a second chance at his career. His playing and singing reflect a rare joy that is catching. He happily engages with his audience and tells stories to introduce some of his songs. Several times he asked the audience for input on what they wanted to hear. His genuine appreciation for his fans is not limited to the stage. When he is not on stage, he hangs out with the audience members, moving around and talking to folks, taking pictures, and signing autographs.

I especially enjoyed when Brown dug into his back catalog, as when he played “High and Dry,” the first track on his debut album form 1991 of the same name. Although his voice has grown deeper in the ensuing decades sine he released the song as a young man, Saturday’s performance infected the song with the hard-won blues of an older man who has seen more of life. I liked the new version just as much as when I first heard the song back in the 1990s.

At the Brian’s Backyard BBQ performance, the members of Brown’s outstanding backing band included drummer Vito Luizzi (a member of the late Johnny Winter’s band), guitar player Rob Daniels (who also performs on his own as a singer-songwriter), and professional bassist Chuck Torres. The band sounded great on both the cover songs and on Brown’s originals.

Brian’s Backyard BBQ and Blues is a fun venue with excellent food, great service, comfortable atmosphere, and surprisingly exceptional acoustics. Opening performers during the “Country Fest” evening included Shannon Scott, Alyssa Startup, Matt Johnson, and Rob Daniels, all who did a great job entertaining the crowd. Another opening act was the Jason Casterlin Band, which got the audience going with a fun set of country songs. The Hudson Valley group played a combination of originals and covers like “Wagon Wheel.” Casterlin has an excellent voice, so country music fans should check him out if he plays in your area.

Marty Brown’s New Video for “God’s Dance Floor”

Country singer-songwriter Marty Brown just released a new video for his original song, “God’s Dance Floor.” The love song praises the act of dancing out under the open sky. Check it out.

Brown continues to tour and release great new original songs since his run on America’s Got Talent, showing he still has the talent he showed in the early 1990s. Other recent song releases include the catchy “Crackerjack” and the wonderful “Whatever Makes You Smile.” We look forward to whatever he does next.
