A Three-Legged Dog & the Wisdom of “Louie”

The wonderful Charles Grodin has now made a couple of short appearances on Louis CK‘s FX television show Louie. In a recent episode during this season, Grodin appeared again as Louie’s cranky Dr. Bigelow, reluctantly dispensing his advice to an eager Louie. What comes out is both wise and hilarious.

When Louie runs into Dr. Bigelow taking his three-legged dog for a walk, Louie seizes the opportunity to ask him about his latest love dilemma. Louie wonders what he should do about a woman he has been seeing who is going to move out of the country. Dr. Bigelow recounts some of the horrors of the world, showing Louie how he should not worry so much about his choice. And then he uses his dog to illustrate how happiness is relative.

Check it out, and you may learn something from Dr. Bigelow, or at least get a few laughs. Charles Grodin’s face at several points along with his sigh after he recounts the horrors of the world are priceless.

“Louie” Returns For a New Season

    Louis C.K.
In the old days, there was one time of year when you knew that all of the TV shows were starting their new season of shows. But in this era of random season endings and seasons divided up, we have to rely upon word of mouth. So I am here to inform Louis C.K. fans that after a nineteen-month break, season four of Louie begins May 5 on FX. Get ready — or set your DVRs or set up your computers or cell phones or however you kids watch TV these days. Here is the promo, featuring Louie jumping off a bridge.

The new season features fourteen episodes, but they will run with two episodes back-to-back over seven weeks.

A Charlie Brown Christmas Reunion: Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charleeeee

Charlie Brown is always hot this time of year, making his story ripe for both a modern animated update and a Saturday Night Live reinterpretation of a famous Peanuts play. First, the folks at Animation Domination High Def created “A Charlie Brown Christmas Reunion,” imaging Charlie Brown returning to visit the Peanuts gang as an adult.

The video makes the connection that the child Charlie Brown we knew might grow up to be someone like Louis C.K.’s character in Louie, even copying the opening credits sequence from that show. And we have already seen Lincoln as Louie, so why not Charlie Brown?

This weekend, Saturday Night Live did its own interpretation of Peanuts by presenting an ad for a stage production of “You’re a Rat Bastard, Charlie Brown.” The segment imagines a Brooklyn version of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

In SNL’s reinterpretation of Peanuts, Al Pacino (Bill Hader) stars as Charlie Brown, with Guest Host Martin Short doing a spot-on Larry David playing Linus. Check it out.

Some of the most innovative half-hour television comedy shows in recent years has been comedian Louis C.K.’s show on FX, Louie. Last night, Louis C.K. hosted Saturday Night Live, and one of the best segments was a mash up of Louie with the sixteenth president of the United States. As we go to the polls this week, the “Lincoln” segment is a good reminder to keep our good humor. Check out what a comedy starring Abraham Lincoln just might look like in 2012 if Lincoln were anything like Louie.

2024 Update: Currently the video is not available, but here is another SNL segment about Lincoln.
