“Sons and Daughters” on “The Office”

Decemberists Crane Wife Last night, The Office featured what was apparently edited from the pilot for the abandoned spin-off series Shrute Farms. The episode “The Farm” featured Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) returning home after his aunt had died.

In the episode, we also met Dwight’s brother Jeb (Thomas Middleditch) and his sister Fanny (Majandra Delfino).  The three siblings discovered that their aunt left her large farm to the three of them if they would return to take care of the farm.

The enjoyable episode did seem like a pilot with the introduction of characters that you expect to be developed. Also, there were some oddball touches, touching on the strangeness we are used to seeing when Dwight has returned home in previous episodes.

The Office has long been one of my favorite shows in both the American and the U.K. versions.  And even though I have missed Steve Carrell, I so hate to end my relationship with the characters that I would have given any spinoff a chance. It would have been interesting to see how Dwight’s life developed. But, alas, it is not to be.

“Sons and Daughters”

One of the interesting aspects of the episode was the appearance of a Decemberists song I really like, “Sons and Daughters.” In one scene, Dwight and his family sit around playing instruments and singing the song.

While it seems odd that the Schrutes would be playing a recent song by the Decemberists instead of an old German folk tune, it was great to hear the Decemberists and “Sons and Daughters” getting some wider exposure. (Update: The original video of the scene is no longer on YouTube, but the video below includes some images from the episode.)

The Decemberists

“Sons and Daughters” appeared as the final song on the Decemberists album The Crane Wife (2006), the band’s major label debut.  The album is partly based on a Japanese folk tale about a man who discovers the woman he married is actually a crane he had once helped.

As part of the song cycle on the album, “Sons and Daughters” is a hopeful ending, looking forward to a better future.

When we arrive sons and daughters;
We’ll make our homes on the water;
We’ll build our walls with aluminum;
We’ll fill our mouths with cinnamon, now.

Although it looks like there is no happy ending for Schrute Farms for now, we are hopeful that The Office will pull it together to give us a finale that lives up to this song and the great series. In this video, the Decemberists, who have previously appeared on The Simpsons, play “Sons and Daughters” at Metro Theatre in Sydney in 2010:

    Jimmy Kimmel Oprah Winfrey
    After putting together the biggest actors for the biggest fake movie in the fake trailer for Movie The Movie last year, Jimmy Kimmel has done it again. Following the Academy Awards, his late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live featured the trailer for the sequel for the greatest movie never made. The star-studded trailer includes Jessica Chastain, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, Rachel Weisz, Bradley Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, and more. Check it out.

    If that is not enough, Kimmel later presented the behind-the-scenes story of the trailer in “Making of ‘Movie: The Movie 2V.'”

    Michelle Obama and Jimmy Fallon on the “Evolution of Mom Dancing”

    Michelle Obama Jimmy Fallon

    As part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to end childhood obesity and encourage parents to get up and move around with their children, she appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this week. To show that she does not just talk-the-talk, she got up and danced with Jimmy Fallon in this funny video that illustrates the “Evolution of Mom Dancing.” Get up and join in!

    Controversial Video of the Week: “DJesus Uncrossed”

    Djesus Uncrossed SNL

    Last night, Saturday Night Live pondered what subject director Quentin Tarantino may tackle next after turning the Holocaust and American slavery into revenge fantasies in Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012). In a mock ad, this week’s host Christoph Waltz, who starred in both those movies, appeared in the starring role in a new Tarantino film, DJesus Uncrossed.

    While the short DJesus Uncrossed video seems mainly aimed at making fun of the Tarantino style and our fascination with revenge films, some have complained that it mocks Christians. Check it out and judge for yourself.

    Act One: Fred Armisen as Ira Glass

    this american life ira glass Slate recently featured an essay about an episode of NPR’s This American Life that was co-hosted by Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live and Portlandia. I am a fan of This American Life, even though I only sporadically catch it on the radio. I also loved the short-lived TV version of the show, watching every episode on DVD.

    Two years ago, Fred Armisen did an imitation of This American Life host Ira Glass on Saturday Night Live. But, you probably never saw it because it was only performed in dress rehearsal. Armisen later explained that they cut the bit because they concluded that Glass was not famous enough for an SNL segment so people would not get the humor.

    I can imagine if you have never heard of This American Life, you might not find the imitation funny. But if you have listened to or watched This American Life, like me you might find yourself laughing at this segment from Saturday Night Live that never made it on the air.

    Update September 2013: The Saturday Night Live video with Fred Armisen as Ira Glass is no longer available through NBC. But, you may hear Armisen imitating Glass at the beginning of the following This American Life episode on doppelgängers (FYI, the show’s link to the Armisen video takes you to NBC’s website but the video is no longer there):
